Opera – Haymarket

The Brief: A commission to design a cafe overlooking the train line at Edinburgh’s Haymarket Station for a private client.

The Design: The site occupied waste ground behind an existing high stone wall. The building breaks through the existing listed stone wall and has a presence onto the concourse outside the main station building.

The planners dictated a single storey building with limited glazing onto the exterior elevations. We set the building back from the busy pavement line and located the entrance off an external courtyard. The existing stone wall is taken into the building and also forms the backdrop to the rear terrace overlooking the station. Attempts to link this terrace with the platform were resisted.

The cafe has since been leased to ‘Starbucks’ who have carried out their own alterations, removing the connection to the original entrance court.
